“The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.”—Abraham Lincoln
A reader from New Zealand wondered if I was planning to post my annual horoscopes. I am not. However, in today’s instalment, I will be talking a little about how the energies in 2011 might influence the reader’s sign—Scorpio; the statements that might appear in a horoscope column are bolded. When horoscope writers address the generalities for the signs, paying attention to what changes and what stays the same. The analysis typically begins with the most exotic and moves through to the level of the Sun, which marks the calendar months. I have written about Pluto in Capricorn, read the post, this influence began in late 2008 and I launched this blog then. Pluto is about 60 degrees from the early part of Scorpio—all signs are 30 degrees in length and form a circle of 12 signs. 60 degrees is an aspect in astrology, one that assists us to gain and achieve based on our actions. If we work through the wheel using the twelve segments as areas of life, Scorpios are dealing with communication, neighbourhood and the setting for daily life. This might see many Scorpios moving residence—I did.
The next planet working in from the outer to the inner is Neptune, which is changing signs for a PREVIEW from April 4 to August 4. The new home for Neptune for 14 years is Pisces. This energy is harmonious to Scorpio. Neptune represents the mystical realm and has a knack for dissolving things. What was once important ceases to be so. This energy might manifest as spirituality, looking at life beneath the surface. It might bring creativity to the surface for Scorpio. Or it might make us want to forget our troubles at the bottom of the proverbial glass filled with some alcoholic nectar. Without an actual birth chart we can make educated guesses. › Continue reading
Venus in motion

“The joy of a spirit is the measure of its power”—Ninon de Lenclos
Venus is the topic for today. She left Scorpio at 4:30 AM PST today having spent four months in Scorpio, this theme returns in eight years. The next long visit Venus makes to a zodiacal sign is in 2012, when she spends four months in Gemini (April 3-August 7, 2012)and we experience the second Venus occultation, the first one was back in 2004. Occultations in Gemini occur at intervals of a quarter of a millennium. For now, Venus will breeze through all the signs in less than a year. In fact Venus will be in Sagittarius twice this year—good for you Sagittarians! The same applies to Capricorn. Venus stays in Sagittarius until February 3 (21:58 PST) and her next visit to Sagittarius takes place November 2-26, 2011. Her itinerary is at the end of this post. Venus is in her morning star phase and if we want to catch a glimpse of her we have to get up early or stay up most of the night. Venus is visible in the Southern Eastern sky beginning about 3.75 hours before Sunrise. She is the brightest and can even be seen when the Sun makes its initial entrance and the other stars quickly fade.
Sagittarius energy is inspired, enthusiastic and loves to explore. People with Venus in Sagittarius have an infectious laugh; they want everyone to feel the fun. Life to them is not a destiny but the road less travelled. Socializing is in their blood, and most of them have a big circle of friends. While Venus is in Sagittarius we should take a page from their playbook and engage in activities that feed our sense of fun and the explorer within. We should learn to take ourselves less seriously—laugh at yourself, and just laugh. Sagittarius is also the sign of the philosopher, everything has deeper meaning. Look beyond the surface, ponder the mysteries of life—learn to appreciate yourself. › Continue reading
Does timing matter

“I never did anything worth doing by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work.” — Thomas Alva Edison
As we continue with the Capricorn energy, we are likely to note price wars. It happens every year, and over the past couple—since Pluto moved into Capricorn—those Boxing Day sales are forever extended and the price wars fiercer. I need a new printer for my home office. Went out on Tuesday to look for one, and today thought I would check who is selling it for how much. The price drop means over a hundred dollars in my pocket based on the suggested retail price. I love it how each retailer gives a different starting price. Could have bought it on Tuesday, was tempted, but decided to wait until the energy in the heavens spelled long-lasting. This will only be my fourth printer in 20+ years. I like buying items like the printer and the computer with a good Mars—it is now in Capricorn the best sign for Mars (exaltation). The Moon has moved into Aquarius and is no longer in her detriment. And I must admit I like the energy of Epiphany each year, the twelfth day or whatever else it is called. › Continue reading
What is in a horoscope
Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 | Astrology for You, astrologer's diary | Write Comment
As the calendar year turns we think about what the year held for us and what the New Year will bring. We may choose to read horoscopes and hope to garner insights. Since the 1920s horoscope columns have become increasingly popular, and many hold the perception that this is the same as a personalized horoscope. The Sun sign columns began in England by astrologers hoping to popularize astrology—it worked in part, most of us know our Sun signs. That is the one known component for a horoscope writer. Astrologers, who write these columns, look at the planets in transit and see how these might influence the Sun position by sign.
Readers may think that it is easy to pen one of these columns, however it takes more than knowing the mechanics of astrology, we need to understand life and be able to choose the best words to convey the energy of the stars. Astrology is one the oldest jobs, the surviving text books date back a couple of millennia and the authors of these works refer to the ancient astrologers… Two thousand years ago astrologers wrote extensively about the techniques to decipher the length of life—nowadays that is somewhat of a taboo. This year I decided to talk about real astrology versus horoscopes written for a sign, which gives us a limited scope of information when contrasted with a horoscope for a person. › Continue reading
The power of thoughts

“Most of us are asleep while the clock of life ticks on. In our electronic society few of us ever see the stars as our ancestors did or ponder the fact that we are all aboard a global spaceship hurtling through the night of a galaxy …”—Marc Robertson.
The eclipse took place during the night for us; 1:03 AM PST. It is the first New Moon for the year and the only one in Capricorn for the year. New Moons represent new beginnings. No reflection but instinctual action. Last year the Capricorn New Moon took place at 25° of Capricorn and was also an eclipse. This year the degree is 14° of Capricorn. We will have a second New Moon in Capricorn in on Xmas Eve 2011, and none next year—the Solar eclipses in Capricorn are over with this one for another 19 years. This is an ideal time to make resolutions, to begin something new and long-lasting.
I chose that quote from Marc’s book called the Engine of Destiny, to discuss how we motor on through life without pausing to think about our choices. We simply keep on stating “let’s see what happens”, our free will allows us to choose to make something happen instead. When we live more consciously, make decisions and take action we significantly alter our reality. Naturally some things are beyond our control. An example of something beyond our control would be the one eclipse like event I heard about this morning was that the one and only grocery store in Fort Langley burned down. It had been there for decades. This affects the community because many of the older residents do not drive and shop there for all of their daily consumables. › Continue reading
Embracing Change

This year I am planning to pay more attention to the ever changing sky. To that end, I opted for an astronomy calendar. On a clear night I have a beautiful view directly due North. We live under a flight path, not just planes but birds, flocks of which often cover rooftops and the patches of grass that pass for backyards. Earth is at perihelion today, that means closest to the Sun for the year. Reality meets inspiration and/or divinity. Wonder if the Epiphany was assigned a day close to this annual event to coincide with our so ancient pagan practises of paying attention to the stars and natural phenomena. Epiphany takes place on the 6th. I realize it is a religious Christian observance, however, I remember a tradition of not clearing the Xmas decorations until that date, which is also known as the 12th day—thirteenth in Sweden. In Finland it is a statutory holiday that ends the seasonal celebrations. It’s been around since the second century of the current era. › Continue reading
The Power of Eclipses

“Astrology is a language. If you understand this language, the sky speaks to you.” —Dane Rudhyar
It is a New Year, we might have made resolutions—ours to break or keep. I did not write annual horoscopes for the year. After penning those for the past 20 years I felt I needed something different. My resolution is to write a short piece about astrology and the sky each day; taking my cue from the Julia and Julie project… Astrology is so much more than the daily, monthly and yearly horoscopes. We each have a unique horoscope with planets, houses and the intricate web of connections between them. The Moon is waning in the sky, and we have a solar eclipse on Tuesday. My Astronomy Calendar states that this partial eclipse requires special glasses if you gaze upon it in Europe. Astrologically speaking, the eclipse takes place at 13°Capricorn39’. That is the degree of the Sun for those born January 4. We are in the Eclipse season, we had one just prior to Xmas. People still worry about eclipses and what omens they carry. Typically we can count on Mother Nature to reveal her awesome power; the weather has been extreme around the globe—floods in Australia, severe snow storms on the East coast of North America, and devastating rains in California. Around Vancouver, Canada the weather is seasonal so at the moment we are the lucky ones. › Continue reading
Premier’s job vacant
Monday, November 15th, 2010 | Canadian Politics, astrologer's diary | Write Comment
Well, Dianne Watts made a prudent choice to stay as the Mayor of Surrey. Carole James isn’t willing to step up either. Venus is retrograde and the women are not wishing to take on an ailing party. In my first post about this I said that Dianne Watts shouldn’t toss her hat in. In the second one I thought she just might take it on, looking at her solar chart. It was hers had she wanted to it. Just shows how we are free to exercise our free will. Venus moves direct November 18, and after that date we are more likely to hear about the decisions of the other potential contenders. I think I will wait until I hear who is willing to take the inherent risk. The longer this takes the more likely it becomes that we’ll have yet another election. Such a shame in terms of our money, the election costs are potentially higher than any of the other extravagancies the gang in Victoria might spend our money on. It has been interesting to listen how the media has been trying to recruit women to fill this vacancy. Do the men think it is political suicide?
Will Dianne Watts take the premier’s job?

On the web it is typically easy to find out a public person’s date of birth. Not the case with Dianne Watts the mayor of the City of Surrey, where I happen to live these days. She was born October 30, year not given. She celebrated a major birthday in 2008. Eventually I found a few interview articles that stated that in her early thirties she was a stay at home mother before running for counsellor at the city of Surrey. An article in the Vancouver Sun in 2009 stated that she graduated from a High School in Kelowna, and that in 2008 she celebrated her 50th birthday. In her early 20s she moved to Australia and stayed there until the late 1980s which in terms of astrology was around her first Saturn return—a sort of coming of age cycle. I have yet to uncover a time of birth and might not be able to do that—so using a noon hour chart with the natural wheel cast for Kelowna, where I assume she was born. This is an interesting chart. She has her Sun, Venus, Jupiter and Neptune in a tight stellium in early Scorpio. That Teflon signature she shares with Ronald Reagan is probably shown by the Sun and Jupiter pairing. Her chart pattern is a locomotive and the engine is the energetic, stubborn ‘never give up’ Mars in Taurus. › Continue reading
Leadership Race
Saturday, November 6th, 2010 | Canadian Politics, astrologer's diary | Write Comment
During the last election May 2009, I wrote that I expected Gordon Campbell to retire after the Olympics and by year end of 2010. On November 3, 2010 at 11:30 AM he made the four minute announcement. He held onto the job for a lunar node cycle, 18 months. I just had to pull up the Election Day chart for a review. I use the close of polls in the capital of the province because it marks the time the people have had their say. That chart also describes how the time between two elections plays out. The timing of beginnings matters. In review, we elected this bunch in with Scorpio on the Ascendant as the polls closed. In May 2009, the sales pitch and election promises (Mercury) were about to be recanted (Mercury was retrograde and about to change signs). Mercury was in his own sign during the campaign able to pitch the ideas with eloquence. But he was about to return to Taurus—this sign is about money. Behind the scenes a deal had been negotiated and information about this withheld, which unfortunately goes with the territory of politics. There is always a spin. So now we have the hated sales tax—harmonized sales tax (harmonized, how ironic) — a binding province wide referendum on the HST will be held September 24, 2011. › Continue reading
