Thoughts about Pluto

In a recent conversation with a colleague we talked about Pluto and what Pluto in the 12th house might mean. Some of the keywords for Pluto are rather negative—death, destruction, atomic bombs and that vague word ‘transformation’. In my life Pluto has finished with my twelfth house and in my friends chart that is influence is now active for another 5-6 years. Pluto is not all bad. I think that the role of Pluto is to unearth anything we may have repressed-the length of time is irrelevant to Pluto. My favourite description for how Pluto operates involves the septic tank. The septic tank processes waste, spreading onto the septic field via perforated pipes and this liquid in turn fertilizes the ground. Astrology associates Pluto with elimination and waste. When the septic tank is too full or the field is not functioning properly the waste will back up inside the house. Naturally it is the lack of maintenance that is the culprit. However, if you have ever had to clean up returned sewage, you know it is not that pleasant.
Pluto goes beyond the surface, deep into our core and reveals both the ugly and the beautiful; Pluto does not discriminate. Think of a time when you had to fish something you dropped into the toilet bowl out of there, regardless of what else was floating around. Why?—because it was too valuable to flush. That is how Pluto operates.
The concepts of the twelfth house are our subconscious, our beliefs, our fears, our insecurities and our understanding of life. It is a secret, private area of the astrological chart. During the years, Pluto transits this area we address all kinds of long-forgotten, long-repressed and long-neglected ideas…
The twelfth house is one of the learning houses, which I associate with understanding and believing. As a cadent house, it is also a house of planning. We set ideas in motion here. In a few years (with Pluto in Capricorn about 16 years in total, beginning 2008) Pluto moves into the first house, which is a house of action and self-expression-and now the changes are about you personally and about the choices you are making actively.
Pluto is about power, the depths of the soul-the god of the underworld, is in charge of unleashing the power of the subconscious.

This is a very good article. I have found Pluto quite devasting as it sits 19 degrees Leo in 8th House. I was wondering if it is responsible in any way for financial loss?

I really don’t think that conclusion can be drawn from Pluto in the 8th house natally. We primarily react to what the personal planets represent. The global economy has been freefalling since 2008 and we can draw some links to Pluto in Capricorn and big business. When the economy is bad all of us feel it. I would probably begin by looking at how the Sun, which likely rules the 8th house, is positioned natally and what transits and progressions are going on. In order to personalize astrology for each individual we need to look at the entire chart not just components of it–and not at the outer planets in isolation.
