Saturn in Libra

“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.”— John Quincy Adams
Saturn is the last planet visible to the naked eye. The seasons on Saturn last about 7.5 years—on August 11, 2009 there was an Equinox on Saturn. I would assume Autumn seeing that Saturn is in the autumnal signs now. The picture I have used here was taken by Cassini at our Equinox in September 2009.
New images reveal that there are mountains on the rings of Saturn. These are as high as some of the peaks in the Rocky Mountains, which are 4800 kilometres in length and stretch from New Mexico via Montana, Utah, and Colorado to British Columbia and Alberta. I always remember a drive through Colorado and the awe of seeing the majestic mountains; and I don’t ever tire at looking at the mountains here in British Columbia. The scientists are calculating that the mountains on the rings of Saturn are up to four kilometres high (that’s about 2.5 miles). See the images at http://ciclops.org/ir_index/118/Cassini_In_Orbit. In astrology rocks and mountains belong to Saturn; it is fascinating that there are actual mountains up there. It makes me wonder what the ancient astrologers/astronomers knew that we are now rediscovering through science and space exploration.
Saturn is the greater malefic in astrology, and many of the concepts we hear associated with Saturn are not pleasant. However, there are tons of positive concepts as well. I happen to like Saturn; it is prominent in my chart, so I really don’t have a choice. Saturn is moving into its sign of exaltation—Libra on October 29, 2009. Seeing that it is my birthday, I am thinking of it as a present. Planets gain strength when they move through the sign of their exaltation.
Saturn will be in Libra October 29, 2009-April 7, 2010 and again from July 21, 2010-October 5, 2011. Saturn returns to Virgo for a brief rerun April 7-July 21, 2010.
Libra is the natural home of Venus, and when we think of Libra we think of balance and harmony, equitability and fairness. Lovely concepts don’t you agree. Libra evens things out.
The housing market is tied quite strongly to the lunar node axis, which is currently through the Capricorn-Cancer axis. Thus Saturn is in charge of the North Node, I see this as increasing the value of real estate and chances are that a year from now-October 2010-the interest rates begin to climb up again. We might finally experience growth in the economy starting around April-May 2011.
For Cancer-Sun nations such as Canada and United States, Libra represents homes and families. I expect that these are the two primary topics for the next couple of years. Some of the associated debates might be with assistance, making it easier for families to cope as well as debates about what constitutes a family. The traditional mother and father with 2.2 kids, or will we allow non-traditional families to have the same benefits afforded to the former.
The basic Saturn concepts are:
• Restriction, reality, and boundaries
• Structure, responsibility, teacher and limits
• Do what is expected of you
• Management, leadership
• Saturn represents the cycle of life
• Maturity, old age
• Depression, anxiety, lack of confidence
• Wherever this energy is at work in your life you are in for real life experiences.
With Saturn we deal with real life, we need to ensure that we build proper foundations for life, home, etc. and that we assume responsibility for our own actions. In the world stage we tend to experience a shortage of something that is represented by the sign. With Saturn in Virgo the price of grain and bread soared as did the price of commodities.
With Libra I find it harder to think in terms of things; Libra would be cosmetics, luxury items, perhaps jewellery and fashion; Wine and fine dining, the arts and culture. We might see new luxury taxes; the arts might lose government funding/grants.
Saturn Seasons
Those Saturn seasons last 7.5 years, and as the seasons change in our lives, we experience Saturn influence the strongest. This one is easy to work out. At 7.5 years of age Saturn forms a square to the Saturn in our charts. This is typically a time when we assume the first responsibility for our own actions; we are at school and now there is homework, goals and tasks we need to manage. While we may have support from parents and family, they cannot do the work for us.
At age 15 Saturn is opposite our Saturn and we are at the height of puberty, we are moving away from the family and becoming more independent. There are other cycles at play as well. Our bodies are going through a change; most of us reach our adult height around this time.
At around age 21 we experience the second Saturn square, this one has to do with venturing out to the bigger world, to a job or to get a secondary education. This is still of age in many countries, in the US you are allowed into clubs and of age to purchase alcohol. Many countries allow voting already at age 18.
The next season is one of the milestone ones, and discussed in more detail below, and takes place around our 30th birthday.
Then at age 37.5 we experience another Saturn square, this being the second one often has to do with getting satisfaction out of our career choices. We are now reaching the most productive years in our life—with Saturn if it doesn’t involve work and effort the results will feel unearned.
At the 7.5-year intervals we need to realign our actions with our goals, those of us with strong Saturn influences in our chart, find planning and goal-setting easier, and may feel less frustration with the challenges Saturn places on our path.
Our Milestones-Saturn Returns
“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.”- Anthony Robbins
The Saturn cycle divides our lives into three 28-30 year periods and then subdivides this into seven year cycles and every 2.5 years or so Saturn changes signs, marking a shorter period when our concentrated attention shifts to address new issues and responsibilities. The above quote by Anthony Robbins encapsulates the essence of Saturn rather eloquently.
The previous time Saturn was in Libra from September 21, 1980-November 29, 1982 and back for a four month review May 6-August 23, 1983. Those born during these dates will experience their first Saturn return-time to assume responsibility for all of your actions and your life. You have lived through a full cycle of almost 30 years and should be in a position to go it alone-that is without too much parental support. This might be a time to buy a home, begin a committed, serious relationship, start a family or begin a career in all earnest. A Saturn return occurs twice during the average lifespan, it is timed by when Saturn returns to the position it held at the time of your birth. I recommend Stephanie Clement’s report—Saturn’s Promise.
Saturn has approximately a thirty year cycle, thus it divides our lives into three segments-reaching adulthood with our ‘first Saturn return’ over the first 30 years of our life, during these years we build a foundation for our lives, acquire the skills to be productive and mature into our potential. The next 30 years that follow are our most productive years and the last 30 are about being a mentor—leaving your legacy or giving back.
If you were born in the early fifties, you are now experiencing your second Saturn return. The dates were November 1950 to October 1953. This will be over by October 2011. Now it is about giving back, putting your life experience to work for you. Mentoring others and sharing your wisdom. During Saturn return years we tend to move forward to new things, begin a new long cycle. We might still be beginning a new committed relationship, starting a new family, buying a new home-but that typically belongs to the first go-around, which takes place at around age 30. More appropriate now would be getting ready to retire, semi-retirement, starting your own business, becoming a grandparent, giving a helping hand to those who need it more. By now we should have learned enough wisdom not to repeat mistakes from the past.
The third Saturn return occurs around age 87; those born in the early 1920s are experiencing that now. Those dates were October 1921 to December 1923. That is beyond the average life expectancy but there are lots of vibrant Octogenarians out there living life to the fullest; not wasting a minute. A friends mother-in-law well into her 80s still waitresses, goes dancing and has suitors. There are a few astrologers, who shall remain anonymous, still travelling the globe teaching astrology, working toward their goals and enjoying every breath they take. If you are less than forty now, think about the potential of living to a ripe old age and what you could envision yourself doing in your 80s, 90s and even 100s.

This report by Stephanie Clement integrates what Saturn promises in your life; and how and when it delivers on that promise. Excerpt about the effect of Saturn return from this insightful report:
“The time of the Saturn return is good for clearing out the dead wood of a stagnant career, old relationships, and other things that are no longer useful to you. This is also a time of beginning. After any repairs to your life that seem essential, you can take off in a new direction. If you like where you find yourself, you enter into life’s activities with renewed vigor. Finally, you put down deep roots that support you through the next 28 to 30 years successfully.
During this transitional period you learn a lot about yourself, about the people close to you, and about your long-term goals and desires. You test out the methods you have learned in the past and refine them as you go along. You may find (or recall) yourself looking into yourself . What have you personally accomplished? What have you had to endure, through no fault of your own, but because of circumstances? Where are you in terms of goals you may have set for yourself long ago? Are they even important now? “
