Transit Pluto in the 12th house

From JJ: “How is the 12th house pluto affecting…” This area of the chart is very private—most of the concepts astrology assigns to this house are hidden, behind the scenes and what we manage to hide from ourselves most of the time. Psychologically we talk about the subconscious or super consciousness… our dreams, the psyche etc. Astrologically we talk about venturing into the unknown, our fears and our inner world. Institutions, such as a hospital, the psychiatric ward, and behind the scenes belong to the domain of the twelfth house. Any time a slowly moving planet takes up residence in this segment of the astrological chart, we are working with those kinds of issues at length; it takes time to uncover what we have ‘repressed’. Reincarnational astrology would talk about this house as relating to the past incarnation, and this area is also associated with self-undoing. Pluto is the slowest moving of the planets, at present about two degrees per year, which means that we may deal with these issues for a few decades. The person, who posed this question has one of the middle degrees of Capricorn rising and has already experienced this influence for some years. The change of the sign from Sagittarius into Capricorn would bring the qualities of the latter sign into play. While Sagittarius is about philosophy, quest for understanding through exploration of different religions, belief systems, etc. perhaps with the help of a mentor/teacher; Capricorn brings practical life lessons, from experience not theory. Pluto in the twelfth house tends to increase intuition, coerce us to learn about the ‘meaning of life’. Pluto energy is obsessive (compulsive) motivated by a need to understand what lies beneath the surface. And with the Capricorn influence we need to have an action plan, what are you going to do with the information and/or knowledge that flows in or bubbles to the surface.
11 Comments to Transit Pluto in the 12th house
I discovered yesterday that I have Pluto in the 12th house of my chart. This answered questions about my struggle to overcome challenges – the main one being relationships, and the sexual problems I have encountered in those relationships, and when there were no sexual problems, my partner was verbally abusive and controlling! That is over now….I hope that by becoming more ‘earthed’ I will avoid these trends, but nothing can guarantee that. The best I can manage for the time being is to avoid becoming involved in a relationship with a man. However I am then left feeling worn down by the lack of affection and love, and my not being able to express my love sexually and by giving. I am not sure what it is that I have repressed in my life, although I now know that I am trying to repress the desire to be in a relationship for the time being! If you can advise me in any way I would be deeply grateful… Kay

This Pluto transit has just begun. Drawing the conclusions you have is oversimplifying the influence. The relationship issues you are having need to stem from the natal chart, Pluto transit through the 12th house is not enough to choose not to engage in a relationship. we do tend to learn most through relationships and we can learn to change our own attitude we cannot change others to meet our needs–their role is to reflect who we are becoming. I cannot advice based on the information you have provided, actually my role also is to reflect your life back to you.l

Hi there,
I have Pluto transiting my 12th house for a few years now. Do you have any comments on pluto opposing mars in cancer and health issues. Also, how the 12th house relates to imprisonment? It seems as though there is a lot of predictive astrology that is quite archaic and fear based.

Pluto and Mars are both about control, Mars in astrology represents surgery. There has to be more going on than just the Mars-Pluto to indicate health issues. Mars can represent inflammation, fever–typically things that pass quickly. Pluto on the other hand can be about abcesses, boils and when strongly combined with other factors–more seriious stuff. Medical commentary is always best in the context of the whole chart not isolated things.
12th house relates to isolation, being alone, our fears, doubts and subconscious mind. It is also linked to prisons which isolate prisoners from the general population. This house is wonderful for spiritual growth, doing charity work and any activity that requires solitude. It isn’t ideal for worldly accomplishments. Astrology is archaic.

Hi there,
Could you tell me a bit about saturn transitting over pluto in the 12th house (libra), while pluto makes a square with the moon in the third house (capricorn), where pluto will be transitting soon?

I posted a short item about this the other day, it is at http://www.annemassey.ca/2009/11/13/pluto-saturn-and-the-moon/

12th house is the area where you are facing how you have adapted to the people in the world. In the 12th house these adaptions will be experienced and the degree of success will be experienced. Here you can make the adjustments neccessary for having a harmonious relationship with the different people of the world. You can meet your ghosts and find and transform your fears, etc. Enemies can be transformed into friends.
When pluto arrives to the 12th house you will be forced to do it. But it should be seen as a pure help from above. Resist, or let it happen, its up to you. If you follow the rythm of life, listen to the lessons, you will be able to turn your difficulties into successful behaviour.
The 12th house is the chance to adopt to the world. You are preparing for the next cycle in the development when you pass over the ascendant. So it is natural to clear things up in the way you relate to the world in whole, before you make the entrance into the next step of finding out who you are yourself, passing the ascendant and enter the domain of your own self.

What an excellent comment. When we face our fears and doubts, learn more about our own inner workings, we will be better equipped to handle life. This influence can last a decade or so. A lot can happen in 10 years, the outer planets always represent processes not single events.

Hi Anne. I just discovered your site. I’m currently experiencing Pluto, Venus, Sun, Mercury and North Node all transiting my 12 H Capricorn. My natal Mercury sits here too. Should I be running for the hills, or just staying in bed?

Hi Anne,
I’m about to enter my Pluto square Pluto transit. Pluto is transiting my 12th squaring my Pluto in the 9th. What can I expect with this transit? I know the separate meanings of the houses, but I’m not sure how they will be working together. Since Pluto has entered my 12th, I’ve been spending most of my time alone, alot of intense dreams and many uncomfortable realizations about things I seem to have kept hidden from myself–the way I’ve behaved, patterns in my relationships, difficult realities about my childhood.

What you are experiencing is straight out of a textbook. Pluto tends to bring repressed matters to the surface so that we can change and grow. The Pluto square Pluto, at present, occurs around age 40. It is one of the astrological factors in play during our midlife crises. Uranus square Uranus follows on its heels. Around 40 is when we tend to take stock of what we have done with our lives and what we no longer want in our lives.
Where Pluto is by house in a natal chart shows what we need to change. The ninth house is about our convictions, opinions, dogma and understanding. That is what is likely to change over the next couple of years. You might find that others challenge your convictions forcing you to take an honest look into your life.
