Pluto moves into Capricorn

“All you need is deep within you waiting to unfold and reveal itself. All you have to do is be still and take time to seek for what is within, and you will surely find it.”—Eileen Caddy
I decided to launch this blog with Pluto’s ingress into the sign of business and structure, Capricorn. In reality this site has been up for about ten days already. Much the same way, we have been seeing the influence out there in the World. The global economy is in turmoil, we are in either in a recession, depression, or a technical recession, depending on which ‘expert’ or leader we hear discuss the situation. The rescue packages and the government spending in various countries are focused on infrastructures. This is of course a very Capricorn concept as is the limitation and long-term debt these actions bring into our lives.
Pluto moves from Sagittarius into Capricorn on November 26, 2008 at 17:03 PST. While knowing a time is relevant to cast a chart, when it comes to the outer planets—or Plutoids as the case may be—it isn’t about a moment in time. Watching the news anywhere on the globe, the headlines already reflect our changing reality. There are numerous bankruptcies, government bailouts or rescue package in order to resuscitate the failing or faltering global economy. During the Pluto in Sagittarius years, 1996-2008 we ‘created’ a global economy and now it is as big as it can be and something has to give. The service industry is beginning to suffer and some of the truly global corporations are feeling the impact. The news is so bleak that people are beginning to ‘panic’ about their security. The last time we were here in terms of Pluto was in the mid 1700 hundreds, although of course Pluto hadn’t been discovered yet.
For the past twelve years, Pluto the planet of wealth, transformation, regeneration and death has been in Sagittarius, which is Jupiter’s domain .The words and concepts astrology assigns to Jupiter are expansion, growth, and optimism. In terms of the economy Sagittarius represents foreign trade, travel and exploration. Now a new era is upon us, and in hindsight we will talk about the onset in terms of 2008, not a moment in time. Saturn is the ruling planet of Capricorn, and the concepts here are limitation, restriction, management and reality.
Before I move on, I want to mention that if you look toward the south shortly after sunset you will see a brilliant Venus and an almost equally bright Jupiter in the sky for up to three hours. It is a beautiful sight and in a few days the crescent Moon will join the two planets. Venus and Jupiter are both in the sign of Capricorn. If Pluto were visible with the naked eye we would see it near the two. What I wanted to say, is that there are some brilliant lights in the sky, and it won’t be all gloom and doom. The first place we tend to see the changes is in the news; our personal lives do not tend to be in the headlines.
I posted my monthly column at www.astrologicallyspeaking.com/Sagittarius2008.htm a few days ago and it includes horoscopes for each of the signs. In this blog I will address things with broader strokes and look at planetary aspects and Ascendants. I will write and post items about planetary shifts in bits and pieces in this blog. The financial crisis, bank bailouts, lost jobs, failing industries, the cost of war… the promised cuts in government spending—these are the very Capricornian items in the news.
I always choose a quotation for my articles and columns; the one for this posting is about the role of Pluto. Not that the energy of Pluto is all that quiet, but it is subtle. I think that Pluto breaks us into distinct generations. The Pluto in Leo generation—the ones often referred to as the ME-generation—never to retire or step out of the limelight spans from 1937-1957. Then came generation X, from 1957-1972, the new leaders are from this generation that wants to FIX the world. 1972-1984 we had the Pluto in Libra generation; the ones that are rather ‘black and white’ in their views, yet oddly laid back but adamant about fairness. Pluto was in Scorpio from 1984-1996, during these years body piercing, Goth garb and all kinds of extreme expression of personality came on the scene. I live next to a Fine Arts School and watch with fascination the unique outfits, makeup and hair of the kids walking to school. These were the wildest when Pluto was in Scorpio. If you grew up during these years chances are you have a tattoo. From 1996-2008 Pluto was in Sagittarius (the Harry Potter Generation), extreme sports, reality shows and many other surreal and occult subjects became a part of the main stream. The world became a village, everything was live broadcasts, news, people living in odd settings, and celebrities had shows about their ‘ordinary’ lives.
I wrote a long article about Pluto and the generations in Finnish, which was published early In 2008, and over the next few months I will translate some of that into English (when I’ll find the time, who knows). So now, we are in entering the Pluto in Capricorn era… How dramatic is that change! We had a preview in the early part of this year. End of January through mid-June. The US Democratic Party was trying to choose between Hillary and Obama. The Stock Market started crumbling. We all had tough decisions ahead of us. Did you notice how everything was Decision something in the news? Remember that whether we chose to do something or chose not to act, both represent a decision. In my annual column for 2008, I talked about the year of change, uncertainty and unpredictability.
Now optimism meets with reality, those promotions and sales pitches, the ideas you have sold need to become concrete change. I think that the US Election results are a wonderful example of how Pluto transforms. Pluto was in Capricorn when the United States declared independence. There was a revolution and the map of the world changed, a future superpower was born… Whenever we have one of the outer planets—Uranus, Neptune and Pluto—in the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn) we are in pivotal times. That begins now and escalates in 2010.
A little astrology lesson about astrological chart or horoscopes
Each one of us was born at a specific time, in a specific location and naturally on a date and year. So are nations, nations are born when declarations are made. The United States celebrates its independence day on July 4, and we know that the declaration was signed in 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are numerous times (and even dates) that are used by astrologers. The most common one is the one for 17:10 LMT. (Remember I use the 24-hour format on my sites). Recently a local astrologer, Mac McLaughlin (his site is www.macsstars.com) gave a talk at the Fraser Valley Astrological Guild predicting Obama’s victory and referred to a US chart rectified by a Vedic astrologer, stating that the time was 18:30, which would make the Ascendant for USA 29°Sagittarius. This would mean that during the pivotal presidential election Pluto was on the Ascendant for the United States.
What does the Ascendant represent? It is our identity, in the case of the nation, the identity of the nation, the façade the people collective present to the world. Pluto is the planet—yes officially a Plutoid these days—of transformation. The face of the nation is changing. If you like to read some wonderful pre-election analysis from my friend and colleague, Vedic astrologer, Edith Hathaway visit http://29eagles.com/election/
So let’s define what an ascendant is first. The band of the Zodiac comprises of twelve signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc. Each one of these signs rises across the horizon at our location for an hour or three depending on location. At Sunrise the sign rising will be the same as the sign the Sun is in. Some signs rise very fast in the northern latitudes and some rise slowly. This sign was called Horoscopos by the Greeks, which translates to the hour marker. To astrologers this is a highly important point, because it defines the areas of life and where the energies of the planets fall.
The Ascendant is our identity, physical appearance, the attitude we have and how we behave, it represents what wins us favours. If you have a Sagittarius Ascendant, for example, you are an explorer, enthusiastic, know how to laugh at yourself, how to preach, be bigger than life and you may be more likely to explore the world. You are also more likely to have ‘foot in the mouth’-disease; that is the knack for speaking what you think before considering the repercussions, truth is important to you. The United States is big, has a huge population and likes to ‘tell’ other nations what to do. The land was inhabited by explorers, people from foreign lands…all very Sagittarian concepts.
United States is a Cancer nation with Venus, Jupiter and Mercury in Cancer. That Venus is now being opposed by Pluto. Venus represents our values and our money. That Venus is conjunct Jupiter in the US chart… USA was founded with Pluto in late Capricorn. What might this mean? In terms of the news in the course of the past few months, the future looks scary, unsettled and we are all worried about our money regardless of whether we live in the United States or not. We are told that the markets haven’t been this bad in 35 years (or in generations or in our lifetime); let’s make that this is unpredictable… When we have the Venus-Pluto connection, we are looking at having to address our value system to its core. Once we have found all the things that are no longer viable or that no longer agree with our altered values we need to ‘weed’ these out and find a way to be true to our core beliefs and values. Venus also represents relationships and now these need to be addressed, these are a two way street, not one telling the other how it has to be. In terms of the markets, this isn’t over until about 2011; the roughest stretch is probably the early part of 2010. The gravy train won’t be there… However, this is a wonderful opportunity to address any corruption within the system and eliminate ‘favouritism’.
Renegade, Renaissance, Radiance and Rosebud… code names for the Obama family. Let’s look at what planet would be renegade—that’s easy—Uranus, the planet of rebellion, breaking the rules, living on the edge and taking risks, in order to implement societal change. That is the US government’s code word for Barack Obama. Renaissance means the return of, the re-emergence of something, the bringing back of something, a code name chosen for Michelle Obama. During the renaissance concepts, ideas and beliefs were brought back into our lives. Traditional wisdom and beliefs were valued… starting to sound like Pluto in Capricorn.
If you have Pluto in your first house in your personal chart, the scenario is similar. You are getting in touch with yourself, partly by external force and partly because who you have become no longer pleases you at your inner core. Similarly, if you were born around the winter solstice you are changing dramatically over the next 2-4 years. You might find yourself doing or experiencing things that you thought weren’t real. You might want to talk to your Sagittarius or Scorpio Sun friends and ask them what it was like during the years Pluto was in their sign. Pluto was in Scorpio from 1984-1996 and in Sagittarius 1996-2008. The horoscopes out there, including my own, delineate the potential based on the Sun in any given sign as the Ascendant. You might want to read your Ascending sign for additional clues.
A short run down of the houses and the major issues for the next 16 years: first house identity and physical body/vitality; second house money, possessions and values, third house communication, travel, daily life and people in our daily lives; fourth house family, home, and our subjective view of ourselves. The fifth house contains the concepts of romance, children, creativity and speculation; the sixth is work, co-workers, illness and learning vocational skills and coping with daily work and routines, and the seventh house contains our relationships and our dealings with people in general. The eight house concepts are shared resources/assets/taxes, death/surgery and commitment; the ninth house includes concepts such as travel, exploration, religion and the broadening of our understanding of life; the tenth house is about career, worldly accomplishments and authority. The eleventh house is about our aspirations, income from career, friends, colleagues and networking—giving back to the community. The twelfth house is about our beliefs, spirituality, our subconscious and all kinds of things that are unfamiliar to us. More to come…

Hello, Anne. Congratulations on your new blog. I’m a fellow ISAR member…just want to say hello! I was doing a search for articles on Pluto’s ingress since I am a Capricorn, with Mercury and Venus in Cappie, also. My Ascendant is 28 deg. of Sagittarius. It’s been quite a ride. And you’re right about not knowing which direction to head now. Uranus just entered my third house. I have Saturn Oppose Uranus natally (part of the Uranus/Pluto in Virgo crew). Yikes!

My annual at a Glance laminate is available in Pacific and Eastern Time Zones. This is a tool I have created for myself for many years now.
