Pluto in the first house?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 | Ask Anne

From Christophe in France: “I was wondering about the effect of Pluto entering Capricorn for Capricorn Ascendant people? My wife is a Scorpio born with ascendant Capricorn and I was interested in knowing what will be the effects from an ascendant point of view.”

The Ascendant is our identity, physical appearance, the attitude we have and how we behave, it represents what wins us favours. If you have transit Pluto in your first house in your personal chart, you are getting in touch with yourself, partly by external force and partly because who you have become no longer pleases you at your inner core. The horoscopes out there, including my own, delineate the potential based on the Sun in any given sign as the Ascendant. You might want to read your Ascending sign for additional clues. Pluto in turn represents transformation, renovation, elimination—a serious attitude adjustment when it is influencing the Ascendant, first house and/or its ruler, in this case Saturn and/or one of the personal planets. Those born in early Scorpio, October 23-29, are likely to have benefits to reap provided they acted on the opportunities back in the mid-1980’s when Pluto was conjunct their Sun. Pluto was in Scorpio 1984-1996. The aspect, as the illustration shows, is a sextile, which 60 degrees. This affords the luxury of making changes rather than having them imposed on us. The Sun is different from the Ascendant, it represents what we are growing into, and as we age, we own more of the facets our Sun sign represents.

In the illustration all of the house cups are at zero degrees. That would not be the case in an actual horoscope, unless we were using a whole sign house division, which was in common use in the Hellenistic era some two millennia ago. Pluto would not be in the first house until the degree on the Ascendant was reached. Pluto moves around two degrees per year while in Capricorn. So if your ASC was around 15°, you would have Pluto in the first house until 2015. At the moment Pluto is in the first house primarily for Sagittarius rising individuals and those born with zero degrees of Capricorn rising. Depending on the house division used the first house is of varying number of degrees. Thus Pluto might spend 5-6 years or a few decades in a house.

In addition to changes in our attitude, our physical appearance and potential changes in our health and vitality, Pluto in the first house influences our relationships. We may find ourselves having to deal with power struggles, learning to compromise and commit to our relationships. Pluto is all or nothing kind of energy. Pluto also influences our family life and our career sector. We may become discontent with what we are doing and work on change. We have the opportunity to choose change and when we opt to resist (fixed signs such as Scorpio, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius do not like change) and find than it is ‘forced upon’ us. Scorpio Sun individuals may have Venus in Capricorn, which would add another dimension to the analysis.

Also in astrology we have progressions, which define our maturation process. Scorpios born around November 19-22, who are in their mid-thirties now, will have progressed Sun in Capricorn. This might mean that you will find yourself questioning who you are becoming, and find ways to change direction. Nothing works in isolation, including in the changing sky.

Capricorn rises for about 1hr 40 minutes in the Northern latitudes, for two hours at the equator and in Australia and South America for about 2 hrs 20 minutes each day. Below are a few time spans for Scorpio Suns.

While the Sun is in Scorpio, Capricorn rises for slightly less than two hours at the latitude of Paris and Vancouver; in Australia Capricorn rises for about 2 hours and 20 minutes. In order for a Scorpio Sun to have a Capricorn rising, she/he would have to be born during those hours.

Sun in the first degree of Scorpio and Capricorn ASC for people born in Paris, France 13:41-15:30 CEDT (-2 hr GMT), if daylight savings time was not observed the year you were born, the times given would be an hour earlier.

Sun in the first degree of Scorpio and Capricorn ASC for people born in Vancouver, Canada 13:03-14:51 PDT.
